The case

It was complained that the drinking water provided in the factory is not clean and has a bad odour. The drinking water tank is dirty as it lacks maintenance. The plastic cups provided are also dirty and smelly. The workers go thirsty all day since they are not allowed to take water bottle with them onto the production floor. Although the supervisors and leaders know about the issues surrounding the drinking water, as they drink from the same tank, they do not inform the HR management to take action. The workers dare not complain directly to the HR.

Findings and conclusions

On 13 February 2018, FWF's complaints handler in Myanmar received a call from a factory worker, who claimed that the drinking water provided in the factory is not clean and has a bad odour. According to the complainant, the drinking water tank is dirty as it lacks maintenance. As a result, the complainant stated, workers go thirsty all day since they are not allowed to take a water bottle with them onto the production floor and also do not dare to complain directly to the HR. As there was an audit planned on 6-7 March, it was decided to investigate this issue during the audit. The audit team concluded that the bad odour could occur because of weak maintenance of the water filter machine, which was raised with the factory management during the exit meeting. The issue was also included in the Corrective Action Plan and factory management agreed to follow-up with regular maintenance. The complainant was encouraged to call FWF again if the problem resurfaces. The complaint has been resolved for now.

As there was an audit planned on 6-7 March, it was decided to investigate this issue during the audit.

03/07/2018 Conclusion of the investigation

During the audit it was found that the factory regularly conducts water analysis. Furthermore, the audit team did not find the water dusty or smelly. The audit team concluded that the bad odour could occur because of weak maintenance of the water filter machine, which was raised with the factory management during the exit meeting. The issue was also included in the Corrective Action Plan and factory management agreed to follow-up with regular maintenance.

03/07/2018 Evaluation of the complaint

Afterwards, FWF called the complainant to inform her about FWF's findings and follow-up with the factory management during the audit. The complainant indicated that it did not always happen but from time to time. FWF asked her to wait and see if the problems occurs again as the factory management commited to regular maintenance of the water filter machine. The complainant was encouraged to call FWF again if the problem resurfaces.
