On 30 July 2019, FWF received a communication from union federation NGWF about a severe labour violation in the concerned factory. The letter indicated that on 16 June 2019 factory management fired 29 workers who initiated to organise a union. The Federation submitted a complaint to the BGMEA on 22.06.2019, but because of non-cooperation from the factory there is no solution to date.
The federation NGWF is demanding the following:
1) The factory must cease all obstacles against workers' legal right to form a union, right to organise and right to bargain and FOA
2) Reinstate 29 worker with their back wages.
3) Pay all legal dues of these 29 workers without delay.
Fair Wear informed Takko about the issue and it was agreed that a meeting with factory management, NGWF, Takko, Takko's agent and Fair Wear would be convened.
A joint meeting was held with the factory management, Takko and Takko's agent, NGWF (Union) and Fair Wear. Factory management stated that the workers were not fired but transferred to a different factory unit that belongs to the same group.
During the meeting the group reached the following decisions: If the workers prefer they are allowed work at their previous factory in the same post with their initial joining date. If they do not want this, the factory will clear their legal dues and payment as early as possible. NGWF will try to communicate with the workers and Fair Wear will keep following up on the matter.
On 31 December 2019, a joint meeting was held at BGMEA head office with NGWF, worker representatives and factory management, in the presence of BGMEA authority. As per a signed MOU, the owed money of the 29 workers has been given to the President of NGWF and he will distribute the money among the workers.
On 17 February 2020, Fair Wear came to know from Takko's local office and NGWF that the factory management has not not honoured the agreement. The agreed upon payment was supposed to take place on 31 January, but it has not been paid.
