Building Collapse in Bangladesh

At Fair Wear Foundation, we are all shocked to hear the news of the latest tragedy in Bangladesh, where a building collapsed which was housing a number of garment factories. Our sympathy goes out to the victims and their families.

While rescue efforts are still ongoing, it is too early to talk about blame. But a tragedy like this once again underscores the importance of acting now to improve building and fire safety in garment producing countries.

Fair Wear Foundation works with its member brands on making concrete improvements in garment factories. Monitoring alone is not enough. Apparel brands simply cannot leave remediation to the factories alone. Facilitating remediation and ensuring that the brands’ own business practices – including product pricing and delivery times – do not exacerbate workplace issues.
