Today, Dutch garment companies sign the Dutch Agreement on Sustainable Garment and Textile. The Agreement and Fair Wear Foundation subscribe to the same goals and will work together to achieve them.
Companies that sign the Agreement can use FWF membership to comply with the social requirements. “All the work FWF member companies are doing to improve labour conditions at their suppliers are in line with the Agreement’s objectives”, says FWF director Erica van Doorn. “That means that FWF members who sign the Agreement, are ahead of the game and already meet the social criteria.”
Brand Performance Check
FWF brands work hard to reduce risks in their supply chain, take responsibility when things go wrong and let an independent NGO publically report on their efforts. “Not all garment companies are ready to make those investments”, says Erica van Doorn. “For them, the Agreement can be a good first step. For FWF members, it provides an opportunity to focus on environmental issues as well – or on areas beyond the Cut-Make-Trim part of the supply chain, which is where FWF focuses most of its efforts.”
FWF members are required to develop internal management systems to better support good workplace conditions. Every year, FWF examines its member brands on how their management practices support good labour conditions during the ‘Brand Performance Checks’, a set of 42 detailed indicators. FWF publically reports on the strengths and weaknesses of each brand, and on how they have progressed over time. Companies need to be able to prove that they have taken substantial steps forward toward positive change in the garment industry.
