Improvisational theater

Last Monday, the Amsterdam office of Fair Wear Foundation closed, as the staff had its annual team day. The main event was a team-building training by Rod from ImproSophie. Using an ingeniously constructed series of exercises based on improvisational theatre, Rod helped us let go of the standard workday ‘let’s get things done’ attitude for a while, so we could focus on listening to each other and seeing one another – and ourselves – in a different light.

With responsibilities all over the world, it is rare for the entire FWF team to all be in Amsterdam at the same time. Last Monday, however, all but one of us were here for the annual team day.  While having fun together was the day’s primary goal, we also took advantage of  being together do some goalsetting for 2011: Where do we need to strengthen our work? What needs to change? What’s going well? All the information will help build our 2011 annual plan.

After that serious start, we were joined by Amsterdam-based singing instructor Vera Ramer. Only a few of us have any experience with music, but miraculously in less than two hours, we were singing a three-part medieval song together! The kick we got out of that was a great warmup for the rest of the day.

Thanks to Rod and Vera for sharing their skills with us!
