The sumangali scheme and bonded labour in India

Periodically a hot issue in the media, public debate on labour conditions in the garment industry tends to stay on the surface. Recently, Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant exposed a story about a factory where women were held for three years ‘to save up for their dowry’. To address this ‘Sumangali scheme’, it is crucial to understand the context and history of it.

FWF is in continual contact with its local stakeholder networks to make sure our member companies have access to the best and latest information, necessary to achieve sustainable improvements. Juliette Li, FWF’s country manager for India, wrote a short paper on the Sumangali scheme, to be downloaded here.

Recently, FWF also published papers on wages in China and on sourcing in Burma/Myanmar.
