The sumangali scheme and forced labour in South India - continued

Last September, FWF published an article about the Sumangali scheme – a form of forced labour – in South India. Since then, we have consulted with our stakeholder organisations – trade unions, NGOs and the local trade bureau – in the region. We also organised a supplier meeting in Tirupur, to get a better picture of local views. Based on the information we gathered, we’ve now drafted a strategy to combat the Sumangali scheme and other forms of forced labour, in close collaboration with those of our affiliates who source from the area where the Sumangali scheme is prevalent.
